Abstract: Not long ago, New York City subways were, in more ways than one, the pits. Poorly maintained, graffiti-smeared cars were braking down at 10 times the normal rate. At one time, 2,000 cars out of a fleet of 6,000 were out of service. Riders with an option fled the system. There seemed very little the impoverished Metropolitan Transportation Authority of New York could do about it. The article looks at the ways and the reasons how the NYC transit moved from the world's worst system to arguably the best.
