Title: JOINT FREE BRIDGE DECK BY ELIMINATION OF EXPANSION JOINT FOR COMPOSITE BRIDGES
Abstract: The performance of expansion joints in bridges is often unsatisfactory and many have a very limited service life compared with the life of the bridge structure. The concept of connecting adjacent simple-span girders with a link deck slab to form a jointless bridge deck is considered. An empirical relationship was derived for the span length and the length of the continuity slab. The analysis was conducted using a mathematical space frame model considering all structural variable and non-variable parameters. The model considered the local and global stiffness of the girders, deck slab and link slab and the vertical and horizontal stiffness of the neoprene bearing. The benefits of a joint-free bridge are summarised.
