Title: Research and development on the dual mode bus system and the guideway bus system
Abstract: Several kinds of dual mode transportation systems have been developed in Japan. The Ministry of Construction and the private companies have developed the dual mode bus system and the guideway bus system. The dual mode bus system is basically an automated guideway transit system whose technology is highly advanced. It has been considered to be an attractive alternative to automobiles and to be constructed in fine mesh networks with many divergent points and many stations in urban areas. Unfortunately, the dual mode bus system has not yet been introduced in Japan by local governments because of its high investment costs and the necessity of widely distributed high patronage. On the other hand, the guideway bus system is a simple, low capacity, low cost, mechanically guided bus system for urban public transport. It has been developed for the purposes of filling the transport gap between the bus and the new transportation system and making a main public urban transportation system in small and medium sized cities. It is also expected that the guideway bus system will make a step by step introduction of the new transportation system possible. Thus, initial capital costs can be reduced and the profitability of the new transportation system for the operator will be improved. In this paper, research and development processes, characteristics, and adaptabilities of these systems are discussed (A).
