Title: AN EYE ON THE FAST LANE: MAKING FREEWAYS WORK
Abstract: This article describes a prototype computer system that provides up-to-the-minute, World Wide Web-based traffic information. This service, called PeMS (Performance Management System), is available in Orange County, California, and will be expanded to cover all freeways in California by 2001. PeMS was designed to allow transportation planners, policymakers, and the public to obtain objective, quantitative information on the daily performance of different parts of the freeway system. PeMS relies on data feeds from traffic surveillance equipment maintained in the field by Caltrans and other transportation agencies. The utility of the PeMS service for transportation managers and engineers, as well as travelers, is discussed.
