Abstract: In the xylem, vascular bundles transport water and salts from the roots toward the tree top, while in the phloem sieve elements transport photosynthate from the foliage downward. The vascular cambium produces new xylem and phloem cells. In higher plants xylem, phloem and other tissues are formed from the apical meristem, which differentiates into primary phloem and primary xylem (see Fig. 3, Chap. 1).
