Abstract: This article describes efforts by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), 1 of 11 operating administrations in the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), to improve transportation safety by improving the quality of existing data, filling in gaps where necessary, and by developing methods to make better use of existing data. For the DOT to achieve the next level of safety improvements, new tools are needed to focus specifically on the causes and circumstances of accidents. Essentially, this calls for the analysis of high-quality accident data to identify patterns that can be addressed by local legislation, technology, and other interventions. This article focuses on several BTS initiatives designed to provide this higher-quality accident data such as: examining tire failures, instituting total quality management into data collection procedures, and extending reliability analyses. Other BTS efforts are also outlined.
