Abstract: A STUDY WAS CONDUCTED TO DETERMINE THE IMPACT OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT ON THE TOTAL TRANSPORT SYSTEM EXISTING IN CANBERRA AND TO DEVELOP SHORT TERM PROPOSALS FOR PUBLIC TRANSPORT IMPROVEMENT. INDIVIDUAL STUDIES AND SURVEYS MAKING UP THIS STUDY WERE DESIGNED TO PROVIDE A COMPREHENSIVE PICTURE OF THE BEST SERVICE, ITS OPERATIONS, AND FACTORS AFFECTING PATRONAGE. QUESTIONNAIRES WERE USED FOR THE PUBLIC ATTITUDE SURVEY AND MODAL CHOICE FACTOR INVESTIGATION. MAJOR FACTORS INFLUENCING BUS USE WERE FOUND TO BE FREQUENCY OF SERVICE, BUS LOADING, BUS TRAVEL TIMES, AND PASSENGER LOADING. INCREASED EFFICIENCY IN OPERATIONS COULD BE ACHIEVED BY RATIONALIZATION OF BUS ROUTED, RE-LOCATION OF THE PRINCIPAL DRIVER TRANSFER POINT TO A CENTRAL LOCATION AND FASTER PASSENGER LOADING. THIS INCREASED EFFICIENCY WOULD PERMIT THE INTRODUCTION OF A HIGHER FREQUENCY OF SERVICE AT THE SAME COST. STUDY RESULTS PROVIDED THE BASIS FOR REVIEWING TIME-TABLING AND ROSTERING PROCEDURES, BUS LAYOUT AND DESIGN, THE SIZE AND COMPOSITION OF THE BUS FLEET, PUBLIC RELATIONS RESPONSIBILITIES AND THE NEED FOR SPECIAL AND PERIODIC STUDIES TO PROVIDE DATA FOR REFINING FORECASTING MODELS AND ASSESSING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF IMPROVEMENTS AND CHANGES ON PUBLIC TRAVEL HABITS.
