Title: THE EFFECT OF THE VEHICLE TRANSMISSION ON DRIVING PERFORMANCE, FUEL CONSUMPTION AND EMISSION
Abstract: THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE TRANSMISSION ARE DEFINED FOR THE VARIOUS TYPES POWER SOURCES IN AN ANALYSIS OF THE INTEGRATED SYSTEM MOTOR-TRANSMISSION-VEHICLE. BECAUSE OF THE IMPORTANCE OF THE PISTON ENGINE EVEN IN THE FUTURE THE TOPICS FUEL CONSUMPTION, POLLUTANT EMISSION AND NOISE ARE INVESTIGATED IN RELATION TO A NUMBER OF SELECTED TRANSMISSION PERFORMANCE CURVES. THE INITIALLY OBVIOUS CHOICE OF A CHARACTERISTIC CURVE FOLLOWING VALUES OF MAXIMUM EFFICIENCY DOES NOT IN PRACTICE HAVE THE HOPED FOR ADVANTAGES, SO THAT IT IS ABANDONED IN FAVOUR OF CONSTANT SELECTIVE GEAR RATIOS. THE INFLUENCE OF GEARING ON CLIMBING AND ACCELERATION POWER RESERVES AND ON FUEL CONSUMPTION ARE DISCUSSED AS WELL AS THE RELATION BETWEEN FUEL CONSUMPTION AND RUNNING TIME. THEN THERE IS A DISCUSSION OF THE INFLUENCE OF AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS ON FUEL CONSUMPTION. IN THE FUTURE THE STEPPED GEAR TRANSMISSION WILL REMAIN THE OPTIMUM CHOICE FOR OTTO OR DIESEL ENGINES, ALTHOUGH INCREASING FUEL COSTS WILL LEAD TO A MORE DIRECT RATIO FOR THE TOP GEAR. BUT CONSIDERING THE REQUIREMENTS IN TRAFFIC IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO CHOOSE THE THEORETICALLY OPTIMUM GEAR RATIOS, BECAUSE IT IS UNLIKELY THAT THEY WILL BE USED IN PRACTICE. IN THIS CASE IT IS IMPORTANT TO FIND A SENSIBLE COMPROMISE BETWEEN THE BEST POSSIBLE FUEL ECONOMY AND SATISFACTORY DRIVING PERFORMANCE.
