Title: TOWARDS THE DEVELOPMENT OF INNOVATIVE MODELS OF INTERCITY TRAVEL DEMAND
Abstract: Policy and planning decisions for modal and intermodal facilities and services require an understanding of travel behavior as well as reliable estimates of the type and level of demand. Considering the magnitude of resources consumed in transportation and past mistakes made in the form of over or under supply of transportation capacity, it is hardly surprising that there is an increasing trend in most countries to seek improvements in the travel demand prediction process. This article discusses a research approach based on identifying deficiencies of existing concepts and methods for demand estimation and suggesting a research approach for the development of innovative models for predicting intercity travel demand. Subjects covered include issues in demand estimation, existing concepts and methods of estimating travel demand, recommended research for innovative models, and others.
