Title: The “WRB” Model for the Operational Planning of Railway Freight Transportation
Abstract: This paper gives a brief overview of a project begun in 1971 by the German Railway System to study the operational planning of long-distance freight trains in the German railway network. This project performed an investigation of the economy of long-distance traffic, analysis and mathematic description of the operational planning of long-distance trains in the large shunting stations of the DB and the development and implementation of a model complex “WRB. The paper demonstrates the practical models and shows their economy through long term continued use as theoretical alternative plans without conversion into operations practice.
