Title: Road works sites - are motorists and road workers really safe?
Abstract: This paper presents details of the existing accident problem within road work sites in Victoria and the measures adopted by VicRoads and their consultants to address this issue. The need for training road work personnel and auditing road work sites arose as a result of the accidents occurring at present and the considerable number and amount of compensation payouts to injured parties. In more recent times, individuals, in some cases responsible for traffic management, have been personally charged with manslaughter. Safety auditing has a role to play in ensuring that road work sites are safe for road users and road workers. Common deficiencies identified through audits involve delineation, roadside hazards and incorrect use and termination of safety barriers. State road authorities are working towards achieving a more consistent road work practice. There is also scope to encourage further participation from local government and potential to develop training programs. Some authorities have already commenced this process. It should be noted that planning of road works traffic management and a good understanding of current road work and road safety standards is a key ingredient to ensuring a safe worksite for all.
