Title: BICYCLES AND PUBLIC TRANSPORT: A MARRIAGE OF LOVE OR CONVENIENCE?
Abstract: Public transport is an important supporting beam in securing future mobility in an efficient, payable und ecological way. Referring to problems in urban areas this means that the combination of pedestrians, cyclist and public transport (“Umweltverbund”) is extraordinarily important. We know that intermodal partnerships and alliances are similar significant as infrastructure when we want to increase the share of public transport in the modal split. An important point in partnerships is cycling because of its flexibility, dissemination und specific radius of action. For a long time past an indiviudalistic/private approach called bike and ride is well known all over Europe, of recent date are public bicycle rental systems. The aim of this paper is to analyse some European examples referring to full mobility portfolio, integrated and customer-friendly services in combination with public transport. These results are compared with those of the Hamburg experiment. The main issue is a questionaire asking for a lot of details of the rental system (f.e. tariffs, accessibility, bicycle positions, travel behaviour and patterns, image and brand) to bring public transport into focus
