Title: RISK OF ACCIDENTS TO CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS AS PEDESTRIANS AND VEHICLE DRIVERS
Abstract: DATA OBTAINED FROM OFFICIAL ROAD TRAFFIC STATISTICS AND FROM A RESEARCH PROJECT ON THE INVOLVEMENT OF CHILDREN IN ROAD TRAFFIC PROVIDED INITIAL INFORMATION ON THE RISK OF ACCIDENT TO CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE AGED BETWEEN 3 AND 17 YEARS. ACCIDENT RISK IS CONSIDERED SEPARATELY ACCORDING TO AGE AND SEX OF THE CHILDREN, THE VARIOUS TYPES OF TRAFFIC INVOLVEMENT, TIMES OF THE DAY, DAYS OF THE WEEK, SCHOOL AND HOLIDAY PERIODS IN 1975; SUBSEQUENTLY THE EFFECT OF SEVERAL OF THESE FACTORS TOGETHER ON ACCIDENT RISK IS CONSIDERED. THERE WAS A GENERAL INCREASE IN RISK WITH INCREASING AGE; WITH PEDESTRIANS THERE WAS A DECREASE WITH AGE, AND WITH CYCLISTS FIRST AN INCREASE AND THEN A DECREASE. THE MOST DANGEROUS TYPE OF TRAFFIC INVOLVEMENT WAS THE RIDING OF MOTORCYCLES. THE RISK WAS GREATER WITH BOYS THAN WITH GIRLS. THE GREATEST RISK WAS AT NIGHT; THE LOWEST RISK WAS AROUND 10 AND 15 HRS AND BETWEEN 12 AND 13 HRS. DURING SCHOOL PERIODS ACCIDENT INVOLVEMENT WAS ABOUT THE SAME IN SUMMER AND WINTER, AND DURING SUMMER HOLIDAYS THE RISK WAS SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER. THE INFORMATION HAS TO BE SUPPLEMENTED BY REGULAR COUNTS IN ORDER TO OBTAIN DIFFERENTIATED DATA ON ACCIDENT RISK AND EVALUATE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF MEASURES FOR DECREASING RISK.
