Abstract: The concept of 'Periurbain' developed by SNCF, the French national railways, means transport to the suburbs. SNCF has ordered 15 low-floor, double-ended, five-section Avanto dual-system cars from Siemens. The vehicle is half tram and half train and can be used on 25 kV ac railway lines and 750 V dc tramways. From 2005, the first 15 Avantos will run on an 8-km semi-circular railway line east of Paris, which will be upgraded to tram-train light rail standards. Trains will operate every four minutes instead of every 30 minutes. An interconnection between the SNCF line and future tramways may be installed. There are also plans to introduce tram-trains in Mulhouse, Strasbourg, Grenoble, Lille, Bordeaux and Marseille.
