Title: Immune Responses, Virus Infections and Disease
Abstract: Abstract Viral diseases of higher vertebrates result from unique interactions between the virus and the immune system. Until very recently it has not been possible to describe these interactions fully for any virus, nor to understand them in mechanistic terms. This study begins with a background introduction for non-immunologists and continues to explore eight virus systems of importance in human disease. The contributors explain current understanding of the immune responses generated in each infection and signpost areas of incomplete or tentative knowledge. Possible mechanisms by which immune responses are expressed or suppressed are discussed, particularly in regard to the modulation of MHC antigens.
