Title: THE IDENTIFICATION OF RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN SAFETY AND ROADWAY OBSTRUCTIONS REPORT & EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Abstract: The objective of this research effort was the identification of those roadway features and roadside appurtances that influence the frequency and/or severity of the single-vehicle accident on the rural, two-lane highway system in Ohio. Relationships were developed between the single-vehicle accident rate and those roadway features or parameters that describe the physical characteristics of the highway and those roadside features and objects that exist beyond the travelled roadway. The results indicated that an effective (reduce accidents), but efficient (miimize cost), improvement program that provides for stabilized shoulders on the rural, two-lane system should be developed and implemented by Ohio DOT.
