The author does not want to extol the virtues of large, visually unappealing, concrete edifices, designed to be filled with high numbers of private vehicles. However he also sees advantages of providing MSCPs where parking is required for a large number of vehicles on a small amount of high-value land space. Two photographs illustrate the potential for making MSCPs look attractive. One is wrapped in other development, partially disguising the car park element of the structure; the other is a conventional structure which is screened by surrounding residential building, both demonstrating MSCPs need not be carbuncles on the townscape. The author comments on his recent work in two major northern towns where parking and congestion are significant problems. In-built resistance to MSCPs in any shape or form means these traffic problems are likely to continue for many years to come. The author is keen to change people's mind-set about MSCPs and invites readers to send in photos of examples of good practice from the UK or abroad.Read More
