Title: TRACTION BATTERIES ALMOST COMPETITIVE AS AN ADJUNCT TO ELECTRIFICATION
Abstract: Soviet Railways has 17 years' experience with dual-mode EMUs and locomotives, using batteries to operate over non-electrified lines and recharging them when under the catenary. Up to now this technique has not proved economic, but development continues in the belief that before long the combination of chopper control with new forms of battery having a higher power density will make widespread adoption of such dual-mode motive power worthwhile. Meanwhile, chopper circuits installed on shunting locomotives are being modified and improved so as to build up experience in this promising field.
