Abstract: This article describes the Farm Lane Underpass project at Michigan State University which involved the construction of two railroad bridges over a a primary access road. The new bridges carry CN and CSX trains over Farm Lane Road located at the southern end of the campus. The bridges were built in order to eliminate grade crossings. The article discusses engineering and design challenges related to the bridges, as well as safety and access issues regarding vehicle, pedestrian, and bicycle traffic on Farm Lane.
