Title: Injury Accidents with Bicyclists at Roundabouts: Influence of the Design of Cycle Facilities and Other Location Characteristics
Abstract: This study investigates the effects of roundabouts on bicyclist safety and bicycle accident severity in Belgium. It finds that roundabouts increase the number of severe injury collisions with bicyclists, regardless of how the bicycle facilities are designed. Roundabouts that have bicycle lanes perform less well with regard to injury accidents than the three other roundabout design types - separate cycle paths, mixed traffic, and grade-separated bicycle paths. Roundabouts that replace signalized intersections score weaker in the analysis than roundabouts that replaced other kinds of intersections.
