Title: SIMULATION STUDY ON A NEW BUS PRIORITY ALGORITHM WITH PLATOON CONCEPT
Abstract: On a bus lane with high bus traffic volume, buses will proceed with platoon generated by the buses obstructed with each other at stops and on the signalized intersections. The bus preemption signal will not function exactly, if the bus after alighting is obstructed by the front bus still on alighting. The green time extension logic will be damaged because of the interruption of the buses with each other. Therefore, in this study, the new bus priority signal control logic is developed by creating a new parameter to assess the extended green time length to allow the a number of buses in a platoon to passing through the intersection. The parameter is named Departure Time Need (DTN), which is deduced from a probability concept of the dwell and running time of bus at the stop and at intersections. The value of the DTN is determined by field observation. Using simulation to make the comparison of the bus priority strategies, the results show the bus priority strategy with the platoon consideration gets the much better performance of intersection than without the platoon consideration both based on the bus passenger and based on the all passengers of whole intersection.
