Title: Improving Mobility Through Enhanced Transit Services: Case Studies for Transit-Taxis
Abstract: This working paper presents the results of a literature review and site-specific case studies for transit agencies in North America that either currently have or in the past have had transit-taxi service implemented in their agency's jurisdiction. Alternative concepts of transit-taxis were classified into a typology of three service design options: 1) fixed route, 2) fixed-route with deviation, or 3) hybrid/feeder service. Three operational strategies were also used in the classification: 1) using in-house vehicles and labor; 2) contracting out services, or 3)) relying on the private market to meet demand. Transit-agency-based case studies were performed using a telephone question-and-answer interview style.
