Title: Moving People: Transport Policy in the Cities of Brazil
Abstract: The book summarises many of the major tendencies, problems and policy issues. It introduces the problems, possibilities and choices facing urban transport in Brazil. Broad conclusions are reached regarding the diagnosis of the situation. Guidelines are given for policy and some areas where investigation is needed. A more integrated approach to relevant policy issues is advocated. The situation in large urban centres of the developing world are compared with the major metropolitan areas of the industrialised world. Modal alternatives are reviewed, especially for high-volume corridors and the relative roles of bus and rail systems are discussed. The book is intended to stimulate discussion and work rather than present a solution to the problems. The ideas expressed are familiar to urban and transport specialists but the synthetic work described is scarce in developing countries and it should also be of interest to international professionals.
