Title: TELECOMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGIES FOR ITS IN THE UNITED STATES
Abstract: This paper reviews the broad requirements for telecommunications in an intelligent transport system, with specific reference to the US National Architecture, recently released by the Intelligent Transportation Systems Joint Program Office of the US DOT. The requirements review is followed by a survey of the technologies which are currently envisioned as being important to ITS deployment. Specific focus is placed on mobile communications technologies for one-way (broadcast) and two-way wide-area communications, dedicated short range communications, and wireline infrastructure communications. Specific technologies which are discussed in greater detail from the standpoint of their place in ITS include Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD), emerging personnel communications systems, 5.8 GHz DSRC, and fiber optic landlines. The paper concludes with a review of the current standardization activities in the US relating to ITS, with particular emphasis on the National Transportation Communications for ITS Protocol (NTCIP).
