Title: HOW AN EC PROJECT COULD HELP TRANSFORM TUNNEL CONSTRUCTION
Abstract: A European Commission project is described which aims to improve understanding of the use of 'wet mix' shotcrete in the construction of tunnels. Funded under the Brite Euram programme, it is hoped that shotcrete rebound can be reduced and the need for secondary linings eliminated. New design rules and standards for the manufacture, selection and performance of materials are anticipated together with improvements in mixing and spraying technology. Details are given of aspects to be covered which include additives, fibres and nozzle length. Varying views on the use of shotcrete without a secondary lining are reported. Laboratory experiments and pilot-scale rigs will be followed by full-scale field trials in Spain. Mathematical models are also being developed to describe the behaviour of shotcrete tunnels under different ground conditions over time.
