Title: Taking the hybrid route to a hydrogen-powered vehicle future
Abstract: The motor industry accepts the need for improved fuel efficiency of petrol-engined cars and the development of alternative vehicle fuels. Automotive manufacturers are looking at hybrid technology in the short to medium term to reduce emissions. Hybrids may also be an important stepping stone to fuel cell technology. The main focus of hybrid technology is the abatement of carbon dioxide. Regulatory Euro standards have also led to reductions in emissions of nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, particulates and carbon monoxide as well as carbon dioxide. A priority for the short/medium term is to improve fuel efficiency of the petrol and diesel cars that are available. Environmental groups suggest that the average fuel efficiency of new cars could be doubled in a decade if vehicle manufacturers were told they had to do it. Fuel tax and vehicle excise duty could offer incentives to buy environmentally friendly cars.
