Title: THE RHAETIAN RAILWAY - TWO YEARS AFTER THE OPENING OF THE VEREINA LINE.
Abstract: In the Grisons area of Switzerland, the development of a 1600-km road network, a private 400-km rail network and a mail van network were essential to prevent economic stagnation. The Rhaetian railway is the longest private rail network in Swtizerland and tourism is particularly important to its success. 700,000t of freight are also conveyed. 30% of the network is over 1500m above sea level. The Vereina line was 85% financed by the Swiss Government and contains a 19.05km single-track tunnel with double track passing points. Motor vehicles and standard gauge freight wagons can be transported on the trains. Since its opening, the journey time from Zurich to Scuol has been cut by 40%. Trains operate hourly on the line. Hotel occupancy rates increased by a third after opening of the line and motor vehicle usage is generally high, even excessive at peak weekends in the winter high season.
