Title: GENERAL SESSION: AMERICA'S TRANSPORTATION FUTURE. REMARKS OF GILBERT E. CARMICHAEL
Abstract: The railroad industry is overlooked as an alternative to gridlock on the nation's highways and as an alternative to congested airports. As such, they are underutilized and could increase freight and passenger services without increasing the financial burden to the government or the public since they are financed largely through private funds. Currently, freight railroads are operating at one-fourth of their capacity. Railroads can carry larger quantities of goods and hazardous materials under better supervised and safer conditions. Passenger trains could better serve rural and medium-sized cities. High speed trains and maglev are coming into their own and should be seriously considered. We have a way to help alleviate congestion and provide services to many of the mobility disadvantaged, but we must use it. Intermodalism among all forms of transportation needs to be encouraged and implemented to develop a more efficient and flexible transportation system.
