Abstract: The municipality of metropolitan Toronto was formed in April 1953. It serves as a senior governmental body with specific jurisdiction over matters that are considered as universal in application and which transgress political boundaries. This article discusses the creation of various agencies to serve the transportation needs of the area. The problems inherited by the metropolitan corporation were many in the creation of a major transportation system; they are discussed in some detail. The major goal was creating uniformity for the entire area. The Metropolitan Roads Department, Metropolitan Planning Board, Traffic Engineering Department, Toronto Transit Commission, and Toronto Parking Authority all work towards a uniform transportation system.
