Title: Smooth Sailing: Regional Airlines May Be Struggling, but Regional OEMs Are Doing Just Fine
Abstract: This article reports that manufacturers of regional aircraft, such as Bombardier and Embraer, had a good year in 2007, despite the problems plaguing some regional airlines. While sales for 50-seat aircraft have done poorly, the move to jets with 70 to 90 seats has been brisk, even during a period of high fuel costs. In addition to Bombardier’s recent rebound and Brazil’s Embraer’s solid year of sales, new regional aircraft are expected from Russia and Japan. Russia’s Sukhoi, which seats 78 or 95 passengers, is set to enter the market in March 2009. Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries plans to deliver regional aircraft after 2013. Bombadier’s Next Generation of the CRJ700/900 features cabins with greater use of composite materials, which saves 4 percent of fuel. The article lists orders for the smaller aircraft.
