Title: PRINCIPLES FOR THE DESIGN OF PETROL INTERCEPTORS FOR ROADS IN WATER CATCHMENT AREAS
Abstract: The criteria for the design of an oil interceptor (basic rainfall, rainfall duration, frequency, run-off coefficient, oil quantity and required efficiency) are analysed and critically examined. Results from practice (obtained from highway authorities in the Federal Republic, inquiries in Austria, Switzerland and the DDR) are brought together. On this basis consideration is given to the application of probability theory for a representative area (Rhineland region). There follow various possible alternatives for the protection of surface and ground water from hazardous materials as a consequence of moving traffic and in addition a collection of the parameters for the estimation of the rate of flow into the basin, taking into consideration results from experimental work.
