Title: NEW OPPORTUNITIES IN LAND-USE-TRANSPORT BUSINESS
Abstract: Intensive car use, phenomenon very well known in advanced countries, is becoming more evident in Brazilian cities, and this is leading to many conflicts, which makes it impossible to manage through the traditional methods of transport systems management and planning mainly oriented to operational efficiency and cost control. Maintaining emphasis only on standardized services, private transit operators and public agencies appear to have little opportunity to transform them into more competitive and attractive for car users. On the other hand, there are many changes in activities' patterns and land-use distribution. Many traffic generators, such as shopping centers, schools, hospitals, offices, sport and cultural centers have spread in urban areas, and at the same time encouraged car use, aggravating traffic performance and also making difficult micro-accessibility to them. Findings from travel demand study, carried out last year, have pointed out to a new mobility management model which was developed on the basis of urban actors' interaction leading to the joint-venture for the land-use-transit services oriented to the specific market segments. This sustainable approach was applied to the Rio-Sul Shopping Center in Rio de Janeiro, and it could be used to improve accessibility to any traffic generator, taking advantage of the installed activities and transport system capacity.
