Title: THE EFFECTIVE BREADTH OF WIDE FLANGE I-BEAMS ON ELASTIC FOUNDATION IN SHIP-STRUCTURE DESIGN
Abstract: The purpose of using the effective breadth concept in design work is to enable the designer to study the behaviour of stiffened plates under bending loads by applying the simple beam theory. The approach of using the solution of beam on elastic foundation in engineering practice is essentially conventional one and has extended to be used in the analysis of many complex problems such as ship's grillage structures (bottom, deck and side assemblies). Consequently, the question of calculating the value of the effective breadth for such beams is of great interest. The aim of this investigation is to outline an expression for the effective breadth of a wide flange I-beam on elastic foundation, when the shear deformation is considered.
