Title: USE OF NARROW LANES AND TAKING OF EXISTING LANES FOR HOV USE
Abstract: New approaches for maintaining urban mobility are continually being investigated. High-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes are one strategy that is finding greater and greater application throughout the U.S., Canada and abroad. Physically implementing these lane treatments has been difficult in many instances. Limited right-of-way and existing infrastructure make adding HOV lanes difficult. This paper provides a broad overview of experience to date in addressing HOV lane implementation, with primary focus on freeway lane treatments. Arterial experience is provided to contrast key differences in the implementation process. Issues are raised that appear to heavily influence specific implementation practice and some observations are provided to influence future practice.
