Title: ESTIMATING IN SITU SHEAR MODULI AT COMPETENT SITES
Abstract: The use of laboratory testing methods and empirically derived equations for estimating low-amplitude shear moduli of soils at four sites was examined. Shear moduli calculated from crosshole test data served as a basis for the comparisons. It was determined that for sites where shear wave velocities exceeded 300 m/sec within depths of 10m, empirical methods established by Hardin and Black (1968 and 1969) and Seed and Idriss (1970) typically underestimated in situ moduli, whereas a method suggested by Ohsaki and Iwasaki (1973) overestimated moduli. Differences between measured and estimated shear moduli varited from 25 to 100 percent. Similar discreparncies were noted when laboratory moduli (resonant column) determined after one day of consolidation were compared to field moduli. Better agreement between field and laboratory moduli resulted when laboratory moduli were adjusted for long-term confinement effects. /Author/
