Title: Urban sustainability: An annotated bibliography
Abstract: New Zealand is an urban society with 85% of its population in urban areas. There is a need to develop a common understanding of how to maintain or improve the ecological, social and economic conditions of urban areas for the wellbeing of both present and future generations. This occurs through investment, political and personal decisions which influence the development of the cities and towns. This process is referred to as urban sustainability. This annotated bibliography on urban sustainability is presented in five sections. The first section, Sustainable Development, provides the necessary background for developing and operationalising a concept of urban sustainability. The second section, Focus on the Urban Overview, provides an overview of urban sustainability. These references take a holistic approach to sustainable urban settlements. The third section, Measuring Progress (Information & Monitoring), is included because of the importance of identifying suitable indicators to measure progress towards sustainable management of urban areas. The fourth section, Case Studies, deals with practical examples and the final section, Issues of Urban Sustainability, focuses on the sustainable management of particular aspects of the urban environment.
