Abstract: Proper safety precautions on highway pavement maintenance jobs can lessen the chance of having an accident, thus saving lives and reducing insurance premiums. This article summarizes common highway maintenance hazards and offers some practical ideas on improving safety. Driver factors (especially speed), visibility and weather are all factors that influence work zone safety. Contractors should provide proper training of road crews, regular vehicle and equipment maintenance and effective night lighting. Contractors should also follow all specified lane closure procedures and implement other safeguards such as arrow boards, slow moving vehicle signs and crash attenuator vehicles. The use of police vehicles, although expensive, is also very effective in slowing passing traffic and minimizing incidents.
