Title: HYBRID VEHICLES GO TO MARKET: WILL GAS-AND-ELECTRIC-POWERED AUTOMOBILES FIT THE BILL?
Abstract: Hybrid vehicles have hit the U.S. market. Although sales are better than expected and more product introductions are coming, the price tags may delay widespread use. According to the author, an environmental and energy analyst, hybrids offer strategic advantages--such as low emissions and high fuel efficiency and do not require investment in new infrastructure. In this article, the author examines barriers to improved vehicle efficiency and the use of alternative fuels, the hybrid compromise, hybrid powerplants, the innovative hybrid techniques used in the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight, operating characteristics of hybrids, the fuel economy and emissions reductions of hybrids, new hybrid prototypes, hybrid market penetration, cost considerations, customers, and the future for hybrids.
