Title: MODEL STUDIES ON A BEAM-AND-SLAB CONCRETE BRIDGE UNDER CONCENTRATED LOADINGS
Abstract: THE DECK OF A TUNNEL UNDER AN AIRPORT RUNWAY IS SUBJECTED TO LARGE CONCERTATED LOADS, WHICH MAKE IT IMPERATIVE THAT DESIGN METHODS BE CHECKED EXPERIMENTALLY TO VERIFY DISTRIBUTION OF LOADS, STRESSES AND DEFLECTIONS. MODEL INVESTIGATIONS ARE UNDERTAKEN TO CHECK AVAILABLE THEORIES AND OBTAIN INFORMATION ON MODES OF FAILURE. TWO MODELS ARE USED, A SMALL-SCALE PLASTIC MODEL FOR ELASTIC STUDIES AND A LARGER SCALED CONCRETE MODEL TO STUDY BEHAVIOR UP TO FAILURE WITH THE ACTUAL MATERIALS OF THE DECK. ALTHOUGH THE GENERAL BEHAVIOR OF THE COMPOSITE BEAM-AND-SLAB BRIDGE DECK IN THE ELASTIC RANGE IS ADEQUATELY PREDICTED BY THE EQUIVALENT-ORTHOTROPIC-PLATE METHOD OF ANALYSIS, LARGE LOCAL FLEXURAL AND SHEAR STRESSES PRODUCED BY LOADS APPLIED BETWEEN DIAPHRAGMS ARE NOT ACCURATELY PREDICTED. HOWEVER, IT WAS FOUND THAT THESE LOCAL EFFECTS WERE REDISTRIBUTED AND MADE NO DIFFERENCE TO THE ULTIMATE LOAD. THE DISTRIBUTION CHARACTERISTICS OF THE DECK ARE MAINTAINED THROUGHOUT THE LOAD RANGE UP TO ULTIMATE LOAD. /RRL/A/
