Title: Traffic noise attenuation and road projects
Abstract: Road traffic noise may place both economic and health burdens on the community. Communities adjacent to major urban roads may suffer from excessive noise levels, while the cost of attenuating noise levels to acceptable levels must be borne by those constructing the road. These costs are passed on to the community. This paper provides a brief review of noise, noise barriers and pavement surface treatments for noise attenuation. The influence of noise barriers and pavement surface treatment on selection of road design and construction are considered in a hypothetical case study of the Pacific Motorway project where combinations of noise barriers and pavement surface types were considered.
