Title: THE REGIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC MODEL: THE HOME-BASED TRIP END MODEL
Abstract: The model estimates home-based car trip generations and attractions for the regional zones in mainland Britain (3613 zones), for wirk, employer's business and other purpose trips. The model was required to estimate car trip ends in mainland Britain, in contrast with urban models, which generally calculate total or vehicular trip ends for a limited geographical area. The data, which were used to calibrate this model, comprised household surveys together with roadside survey cordons around these areas. The trip generation model comprises household trip rates, together with a sub-model to estimate the distribution of households into the various categories associated with the trip rates. The trip attraction model was developed using zonal regression and relates the trips attracted to each zone to the characteristics of the zone. Finally, the trip attractions are balanced with the trip generations in order that the future growth in trip generations is exactly reflected in the trip attraction estimates. A general description of each aspect of the home-based trip end model is given with the emphasis being placed on the rationale behind the model. A full specification of the model is given in the Appendix.
