Title: Living with bad surroundings : War and uncertainty in northern Uganda
Abstract: This paper explores lived experiences of armed conflict among people in Acholiland, northern Uganda. It argues that today’s conflict in Acholiland, although fought on local grounds, is global in character. The paper highlights lived experiences of war and coping that are essential to any understanding of the conflict situation, and thus the focus of the paper is the local. The ambition is to describe and analyse consequences of living with conflict, or “bad surroundings.” In doing so, the paper disputes any interpretation, academic or popular, that concludes that the conflict in northern Uganda is the result of essentially localised, primordial and immutable motivations, or that the conflict stems simply from inter-ethnic fighting for regional secession or state power.
