Title: PASSENGER TRANSPORT. THE NEW FRAMEWORK. PAPERS PRESENTED AT A CONFERENCE HELD IN APRIL 1993. CHAPTER 9. KNOWING THE MARKET: FUTURE TRENDS
Abstract: The problem of planning for investment in transport over long timescales is considered concentrating particularly on demand forecasting. Market research data from the perspective of the individual (Reconstructive Interviews and Stated Preference) are considered. With reference to public transport the heterogeneity of user groups is noted and typical users of bus and rail services described. The use of buses according to age, sex and car ownership is considered in more detail based on the 1978/9 and 1985/6 National Travel Surveys. Underlying factors are discussed. The trends suggest that only teenagers will maintain their current levels of use of public transport and further analysis of demographic trends shows the number of teenagers to be in decline. Despite increasing environmental concerns a low density life style is expected to remain unchanged. The main challenge for public transport operators is to attract people normally accustomed to using their car. For the covering abstract see IRRD 857765.
