Title: CITY OF WINDSOR CONCRETE PAVEMENT DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION EXPERIENCE
Abstract: The City of Windsor has prepared a presentation regarding the culmination of its 25 years of experience in concrete pavement design and construction depicting the most recent developments in design and construction technology. The presentation highlights the specific features of equipment and construction methods used. Our experience touches on residential, commercial, and industrial pavements. This paper focuses on recently constructed pavements in the city which demonstrate the specific merits and advantages of using concrete for pavement construction. In an era where dollars are scarce for municipalities to upgrade and replace worn out infrastructure, the City of Windsor has attempted to focus on the long term solution of maintenance-free pavement. This preferred pavement alternative is beginning to show dividends in maintenance reduction costs when compared with flexible pavement alternatives. With continued increases in commercial goods movements, the wear and tear on asphalt type pavements are becoming more predominant. Similarly, bus traffic throughout the urban area is also taking its toll. The City of Windor's answer is concrete pavements and bus bays to eliminate this growing concern. Also featured is a discussion of state-of-the-art components of concrete pavement technology such as slip form paving, newer load transfer basket designs, joint spacing, and preparation, finishing with trowels and bump cutter techniques, texturing and curing, saw-cutting joints and sealing, profilograph measurements for smoothness, and testing procedures.
