Title: QUANTIFYING THE CHANGE IN TRAVEL PATTERNS AS A RESULT OF SMART GROWTH
Abstract: This paper aims to demonstrate that there is a reduction in vehicle miles of travel (VMT) as a result of smart growth strategies, and to show how these reductions can be quantified. It was found that smart growth can reduce VMT by a reduction trips, shorter trip lengths, and a switch from the automobile to transit or to non-motorized modes. The main smart growth strategies used to accomplish this are mixed-use developments, densification, transit-oriented development, and street layout. Three mixed-use developments east of Johannesburg, South Africa, were investigated by means of extensive interviews to determine their effect on reducing trips and VMT. The findings of that research are provided and discussed.
