Title: A NORWEGIAN ELECTRIC VEHICLE DEVELOPMENT - THE NATURAL GAS PROJECT IN NORWAY
Abstract: The environmental problems caused by road traffic can be divided in two main groups: local effects and global effects. When new emission-reducing techniques are introduced as voluntary or mandatory vehicle requirements, it will take some time before a major impact on air quality can be observed. This paper presents two projects of the Norwegian alternative fuel program. The first project was begun in 1991 with funding for market introduction of the CITYBee electric vehicles, manufactured by Norwegian Personal Independent Vehicle Company, PIVCO. The paper presents the results of tests of the vehicle's performance, range and energy-consumption. These tests are being followed up by road testing for a period of 1-2 years. The second project is a natural gas bus program, also begun in 1991. In this demonstration project natural gas is distributed and stored as LNG at the bus depot. Both CNG and LNG storage on board the buses have been tested. In the evaluation of storage techniques, the following criteria are used: storage volume/weight; operating range; refuelling; and operating cost.
