Title: The Ascent of the White Van Man: Causes and Consequences
Abstract: This paper highlights recent trends in the activity of Light Goods Vehicles in Britain and identifies the main socio-economic drivers that underpin the growth of this type of vehicles. In 2010, Light Goods Vehicles (LGVs) have reached the highest share of total road traffic in the past 50 years, underpinned by constant growth in van sales and in distance travelled throughout the 90s and 00s. Recent data also shows that vans have been more recession-proof than other vehicle types. The paper highlights the need for policy-makers and transport practitioners to explicitly account for LGVs, given the projected growth and their increasing importance in urban freight dynamics.
