Title: ROAD USERS' ATTITUDES TOWARD CALL BOXES ON THE DULLES TOLL ROAD
Abstract: Call boxes have a long pedigree. The advent of the cellular phone, however, must put their longer term utility in doubt. This study provides an assessment of road users' reactions to the introduction of call boxes on the Dulles Toll Road (Northern Virginia). Initially it surveys existing experiences with call boxes in the US. While there is literature in this field, most of it focuses on technical issues and looks at systems integrated as part of the highway architecture at the design stage. There is very little work on pre- and post-installation attitudes to call boxes. The Dulles Toll Road boxes were installed after the facility had been in use for many years. The study then looks at the views of users of the toll road using pre-paid questionnaires both prior to the introduction of the call boxes and after they had been in situ for a period of time. (A)
