Title: Special Report: Hybrids Get a Launch Assist
Abstract: This article describes the manner in which a “case” was made for the implementation of hybrid technologies in the public transit sector. From the nascent Hybrid Truck Users Forum (HTUF), the article describes the fields of economy, environment, public policy, and technology. Despite the relatively high cost of hybrid buses (between $150,000 - $200,000), this cost is rapidly accounted for by the gas savings. Public transit providers generally find that their biggest expense is for gas, at about $700 million annually.. The article’s environmental case is based predominately on the drastically reduced emissions of hybrid vehicles in conjunction with particulate filtration. Public policy also plays a role according to this article, as well as the technological ramifications of the system being a precursor to other clean technologies such as hydrogen power.
