Title: OPTIMAL LEVEL OF AUTOMOBILE DEPENDENCY (A TQ POINT/COUNTERPOINT EXCHANGE WITH PETER SAMUEL AND TODD LITMAN)
Abstract: This article uses a point/counterpoint approach, between 2 prominent observers of the automobile, to attempt to answer a variety of questions related to automobile use and automobile driving in the modern world. Some of these questions include: 1) is automobile use excessive in the U.S., and is U.S. society too automobile dependent; 2) are there major economic distortions in our transport system and, if so, should public policies be changed to address these distortions; 3) is there justification for public policies that influence individual transportation choices; 4) are present levels of expenditure on transit and roads appropriate; 5) how should transportation policy be shaped to address land use goals; and 6) what trends/new technologies are occurring/being developed that will alter the effectiveness or feasibility of the policy changes being implemented worldwide?
